Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this charming family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
