England to Begin the European Championship 2028 Campaign at City’s Home Ground
The English squad will embark on their 2028 European Championship adventure at the the home of Manchester City, on the condition that they secure the anticipated entry for a competition staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an English men’s game since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is highly likely to stage the Three Lions for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.
The English side are set to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, if they top the preliminary round, their last-16 tie would take place at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean starting the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Opening and Protest
The tournament was unveiled at an event in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were heckled as they arrived the venue by around fifty activists, who urged Israel’s national side to be removed from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Placards were displayed with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Fixture List
The opening game of the European Championship will be staged at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will involve the Dragons if they qualify.
Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for UEFA Champions League finals from the following campaign, will attract family audiences and help engage a broader range of fans.
Participating Countries
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and the Tartan Army would do the same at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will participate in the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that miss out on the tournament through the standard process.
Stadiums and Knockout Stage
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground complete the event’s nine venues. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight played at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a host city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.
Tournament Vision
“It will be a tournament for the fans and a showcase of everything we love about the sport – its fervor and power to unite individuals.”
Over 3 million admissions, a unprecedented number for a Euro tournament, are expected to be released to attendees.
