Israelis have gathered throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The national leadership delayed official commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to review the conditions of the agreement.

A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.

The official explained the day's discussions finished without significant progress, because of differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the deal.

He added that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to close the gaps between the both parties.

Critical Points in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid provision
  • Post-war administration of the territory

Citizen Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose brother survived the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location appears as home any longer and until all the hostages come back no one will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everyone home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can start to recover," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to show their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Demonstrator one woman explained: "We need do any agreement required for the abducted to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."

Research now consistently show that around 70% of Israeli citizens want the conflict to end in return for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of the gathering, mourners assembled to honor the dead.

From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli attacks continued.

In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the dawn of that day in the west side district, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the dusk arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who places his face on me all night."

"Continuously we check the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had received the remains of six people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern city of the city said another two fatalities had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south, health workers reported.

The region's health ministry reported a significant number of the {territ
