Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police shared video stills Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
