Leeds Hold Liverpool at Arm's Length to Secure Valuable Draw at Anfield
A pair of unbeaten runs remained intact at Anfield, but only one side could derive real satisfaction from the outcome. Daniel Farke's men executed a perfect game plan of stifling and restricting Liverpool, with the first goalless draw of Arne Slot's reign highlighting the persistent issues behind the current title holders' recent upturn.
Resolute Masterclass Secures Crucial Point
A lacklustre goalless stalemate, the initial in 84 matches for Liverpool, was primarily due to the defensive dominance of the excellent centre-back pairing Struijk and Bijol, combined with the home side's inability to unlock a well-drilled visitors' unit. Liverpool were reduced to speculative opportunities, and a smattering of boos echoed around the famous ground at the final signal on a sluggish performance.
"If I don't utilise the whole squad and we have a fixture list like this, I would never do this," the manager explained. "With a footballer like Dominic I have to protect him. We all are aware his past history was challenging. He is in incredible form but it's important I look after him and sometimes the head needs to win over the heart."
The Hosts' Struggle in the Final Third
Liverpool at first displayed more zip and sharpness than in previous outings, with Jeremie Frimpong influential on the flank. However, golden opportunities were scarce. Their primary openings in the opening half involved forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a smart one-two with Curtis Jones, the French forward drifted infield and drew a stop from keeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
- The Leeds' shot-stopper could not hold the effort, requiring a timely intervention from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz converting the loose ball.
- Ekitiké later raced through onto a long ball but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; despite not going down, his appeals for a spot-kick were waved away.
Missed Opportunities Are Pivotal
Ekitiké's evening worsened when he did not manage to find the net with his clearest opening. Connecting with a pacy Frimpong cross in the six-yard box, the striker miscued a header that struck the Perri while with an unguarded net.
At the other end, their clearest opportunity arrived from an Liverpool goalkeeper mistake. The Brazilian shot-stopper played a careless pass straight to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose first-time effort back towards goal was saved by the alert Alisson.
Turgid Final Stages
The match descended into a scrappy affair, low on incident. Dominik Szoboszlai, returning from a ban, forced a save from Perri from distance. The resulting rebound resulted in Ampadu handling the ball, awarding Liverpool a free-kick in a dangerous position, which Wirtz sent into the defence.
The Liverpool manager made a triple substitution to inject impetus, and soon after Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to nodding his side in front from a set-piece, his effort flying just wide the post.
Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had continued his goal run for Leeds in the closing stages, but his finish was flagged out for a marginal offside. Ultimately, the two teams had to settle for a share of the points.
