Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Major Signing for United

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.

Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building positive momentum.

Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further business:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
