New Year's Revelers Urged to Dress Warmly with Snow Forecast Throughout the UK
Weather experts are reporting a frosty beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Plans Go Ahead Amid Warnings
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are expected to take place, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow over northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the weather service.
Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies
Across the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. The mercury are expected to be low, so warm wraps vital, according to forecasters.
To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

- Disruptions and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.
Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Public Health Advisories Issued
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this meant the weather could to lead to significant impacts across medical and care provision. This involves a expected uptick in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
