The Former French President to Pen Prison Memoir Detailing His 20 Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a personal account in the coming weeks titled A Prisoner’s Diary, which recounts the period served in custody.

The revelation emerged less than two weeks following the ex-leader left prison while he contests his conviction related to criminal conspiracy in a case to secure presidential race money from the regime of the late Libyan dictator.

Life Behind Bars: Solitary Musings

“Behind bars visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he writes in an extract, indicating the book is more about his musings during solitary confinement instead of extensive analysis of the packed and struggling French prison system.

“I forget silence, which doesn’t exist in that facility, where there is a lot to hear,” he continues. “The racket unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection grows stronger while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Describing the Ordeal

While appealing for release, the former leader participated via screen from his cell, depicting prison life as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, who are exceptionally humane, easing this ordeal tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial I must endure. I confess it’s hard, extremely tough. It has an impact on any prisoner as it’s exhausting.”

The former president, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, was the first past president in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure of France to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he intended to spend the period for authoring a memoir.
