The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
