The teenager has featured in seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final berth.

At 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated the player following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to play for either country at the highest level.

Under international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
